Statewide Gathering of Shellfish Commissioners
The 8th annual Gathering of Shellfish Commissioners will be held January 7. 2012 at the Sound School Regional Aquaculture Center, 7 Sea Street, New Haven. Organized by the Connecticut Sea Grant, this event brings together member of municipal shellfish and harbor commissions members and state managers to discuss issues related to to discuss issues related to shellfisheries and natural resource management. Cary Chadwick of the University of Connecticut will open the meeting with a demonstration of the new online shellfisheries mapping tool developed in collaboration with Sea Grant and the Connecticut Department of Agriculture/Bureau of Aquaculture. Tessa Getchis of Sea Grant will discuss the newly funded Community Supported Aquaculture and Education Project and solicit topics of interest for upcoming aquaculture training workshops. In addition, Jennifer Gunther of the DA/BA will identify methods for assessing shellfish abundance and distribution and Kristen Frank will review the results of the study on reopening of the Conditional shellfishing areas.
