Project M² Mentoring Young Mathematicians
The project aims to:
- Create and publish advanced mathematics units for students in Grades K, 1, & 2;
- Develop students' understanding of geometry and measurement content and processes;
- Support young students real-world experiences in mathematics;
- Increase the mathematics achievement of all students in grades K-2;
- Target the participation of traditionally underrepresented students in advanced mathematics curriculum, including minorities, those from low SES backgrounds, and second language learners.
These goals will be accomplished through the development of two curriculum units at each grade level that foster inquiry and engage students in critical thinking, problem solving, and communication. One unit at each grade will focus on geometry and the other on measurement. Students and teachers in 11 schools of varying socioeconomic levels in Connecticut, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Texas are participating in Project M² over a 5-year period.
