Waivers
How Transfer Students Can Request a Waiver for English 1010/1011
The Freshman English office at the University of Connecticut grants waiver requests to students who have done a comparable amount of work—i.e., equal in both quality and quantity to the requirements of UConn’s 1010 or 1011—at another accredited institution. If students have completed two semesters of composition at another university, and have received transfer credit labeled 91002 AND 91003 (listed under "equivalent course" on the transfer credit evaluation), credit has already been given for the Freshman English requirement and students DO NOT need to apply for a waiver. If a student received different equivalent course numbers, he or she needs to apply for the waiver. In such cases, the student must submit the following, in hard copy, to the Freshman English office:
- A current transcript (unofficial is acceptable).
- A Transfer Credit Evaluation, available on PeopleSoft or from the Admission’s office.
Within Peoplesoft, go to the Student Center > My Academics > Transfer Credit Report - One substantial sample of the student’s writing. This sample should be thesis-driven, provide extensive, detailed analysis and discussion of text(s), and present textual evidence following the guidelines of any major citation style (APA, MLA, CMS). Each sample must be at least 5 pages, and should demonstrate a student's ability to use multiple sources. Students may submit papers from any college level course (please indicate which course the paper is from), so long as it is recent and meets the other requirements. We recommend you choose whatever paper you feel represents your best work. Students may submit two samples of at least five pages each if an individual sample meets some but not all of the requirements. For example, if the paper a student feels represents his or her best work is not a research paper with citations, he or she may submit a second paper that does include research.
Upon receipt of this information, Dr. Lisa Blansett, Director of Freshman English, will review your material. Should you be granted a waiver, the information will be processed via PeopleSoft through the Freshman English office. Waivers are usually reviewed weekly during the semester, but less frequently during summer and winter break.
You may deliver your waiver application to the Freshman English office (CLAS 162) in person or by mail (address below). We do not accept e-mail submissions. We do not usually accept faxes because the quality is low and a fax will not decrease the turn-around time on the waivers.

The English Advanced Placement (AP) Test
Students who enter the University in the year 2010-2011 may apply for Freshman English credit based if they received an AP test scores of 4 or 5. Students receiving an English AP score of 3 or below are not eligible for any University credit. Students who wish to receive this credit must submit their scores to the Transfer admissions office, not the Freshman English office. This option is not retroactive, and does not apply to any student who entered the University before 2009-10.
